The Mother and Baby Programme, locally known as “Mama na Mwana,” is one of St John Ambulance Ghana’s flagship community health initiatives.
The programme is scheduled to commence in July 2026 and has been developed to support government efforts to improve maternal and child health outcomes by promoting:
- Early antenatal care attendance
- Safe facility-based deliveries
- Skilled birth attendance
- Postnatal care support
- Family planning awareness
- Maternal health education
- Community sensitisation on danger signs during pregnancy
The programme will be implemented in selected health facilities and communities through a network of trained community volunteers working alongside local health services.
St John Ambulance Ghana volunteers will conduct household visits to support expectant mothers, new parents, and families, encouraging healthy practices during pregnancy, childbirth, and early childhood development.
The programme will also actively involve men and wider family members to promote shared responsibility and stronger support for maternal and newborn health.
In underserved communities, volunteers will collaborate closely with health workers to support outreach activities and improve access to essential health services.
