St John Ambulance Ghana (SJAG) is a national humanitarian and emergency medical services organisation dedicated to first aid training, ambulance services, community health, and youth development in Ghana. Founded in 1937, it is one of the country’s oldest emergency-care organisations and operates under the supervision of Ghana’s Ministry of Health through a statutory mandate established by Act 57 of 1959.

Established in 1937, SJAG began organised emergency medical services in what was then the Gold Coast. Historical accounts indicate it was initially supported by the British Police Force and later became an agency under the Ministry of Health after Ghana’s independence. Its legal status was formalised through the St John Ambulance Act, 1959 (Act 57).

SJAG’s mission is centred on reducing suffering and saving lives through emergency preparedness and public health education. Its core services include first aid training, ambulance and emergency medical services, event medical coverage, community health programmes, disaster preparedness and response, and youth development and volunteer initiatives.

The organisation is well known for its nationally recognised first-aid training programmes, including Basic Emergency First Aid, First Aid at Work, Advanced First Aid, Life-Saver International First Aid, Sports First Aid, Aviation First Aid, Ambulance Aid Training, and CPR and emergency response courses for organisations and communities.

SJAG works alongside government institutions, schools, workplaces, and communities to strengthen emergency response capacity. It trains thousands of first aiders annually and conducts public health education campaigns nationwide, with volunteers playing a key role in its operations.

Today, SJAG remains an active member of the global St John movement operating in dozens of countries. Headquartered in Accra with regional operations across Ghana, it continues to focus on lifesaving education, emergency response, and community health development.
